Howard B. Rockman Biography
Howard B. Rockman is a partner in the Intellectual Property Department of the
Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg. He concentrates his practice on patent,
trademark, copyright, trade secret, and unfair competition law,
including litigation, prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,
licensing, and client counseling.
Mr. Rockman created and teaches a course in Patent Law Practice
and a course in Advanced Claim Drafting at The John Marshall Law School,
where he is an adjunct professor. He is the author of the text titled
The Practice of Intellectual Property Law. He has addressed professional,
business, technical, and educational groups on various
intellectual property law subjects.
Mr. Rockman also created and teaches two internet delivered
courses at the College of Engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago,
"Engineering Law" and "Intellectual Property Law for Engineers." His latest book is
entitled Intellectual Property Law for Engineers and Scientists,
published May 2004 by John Wiley & Sons and the Institute of Electrical
and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Mr. Rockman served as an officer in the U.S. Army on active
duty and reserve status from 1960 to 1968, and was a patent examiner in the
U.S. Patent Office. He served on the litigation staff of the U.S. Department
of Justice, in the Antitrust Division, and Patent Litigation Section.
Mr. Rockman was formerly vice president, general counsel, and corporate
secretary of Jovan, Inc., a Chicago-based fragrance and cosmetic company.
Mr. Rockman is admitted in the states of Illinois and Maryland,
before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit,
and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
